Yesterday, we came together to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. The program began on the 9/11 Memorial plaza with a PAPD, NYPD and FDNY pipe and drums procession, followed by a rendition of the national anthem performed by PAPD Officer Gil Ramos.
A moment of silence was held at 12:18 p.m., the time of the attack. President & CEO Alice M. Greenwald welcomed guests that included family members of the victims, first responders and survivors. “The date of February 26 is engraved in our memories, and so, year after year, we gather at this sacred place to show our support for those who mourn as well as those who endured the chaos, confusion, and terror firsthand,” said Greenwald.
Remarks were given by Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Charlie Maikish, former director of the World Trade Center Department for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The names of the six victims were read aloud by Nicole Rossili, the granddaughter of Stephen Knapp, and Stephen Knapp Jr., son of Stephen Knapp. After the program, guests were invited to place roses on the North Pool of the 9/11 Memorial where the victims’ names are inscribed.
The memories of the six victims live on through their families and friends and the millions of visitors who come to the site to pay their respects each year. We will never forget Monica Rodriguez Smith and her unborn child, Wilfredo Mercado, William Macko, Stephen Knapp, Robert Kirkpatrick and John DiGiovanni.
