LMDC Allocates Funding for 9/11 Memorial Visitors 'Plaza' (Update)

As first reported by DNAinfo's Julie Shapiro, the 9/11 Memorial is planning for a visitors plaza to be constructed on the site where the former Deutsche Bank building once stood.

Updated:  The New York Daily News describes the street level plaza as having benches and "light landscaping."

The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. plans to turn over the site to the foundation building the 9/11 Memorial, which opens to Sept. 11 families on the 10th anniversary of the 2001 attacks.  The LMDC board yesterday voted to allocate $800,000 to build the concrete plaza, which will not serve as a viewing platform.

"This area is critical to ensuring a smooth flow of visitors that does not impact the surrounding streets and sidewalks," 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels said in the DNAinfo report.
