U.S. government officials recently presented Congressional Gold Medals to the heads of each of the three major 9/11 memorials, including Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial, who received the award on behalf of the organization.

The gold medal is the country’s highest civilian honor and is given to individuals who have made major contributions to the nation through their achievements. Joining Daniels in receiving the award are Jim Laychak, president of the Pentagon Memorial Fund, and Gordon Felt, president of Families of Flight 93.

The Fallen Heroes of 9/11 Act honored each site with the creation of the gold medals. Working with the U.S. Treasury, 9/11 Memorial Museum board members Lee Ielpi, Monica Iken and Paula Berry represented the organization in the design process. Each medal had a different design for each of the three selected sites.
