Museum to Hold New 'K-9 for Kids' Program
The 9/11 Memorial Museum will hold a new program on the first Saturday of each month in which children will have the opportunity to interact with Chance, a trained disaster relief canine, and his handler and certified trauma responder, Frank Shane.
During the program, titled “K-9 for Kids,” Shane will discuss his experiences working with Nikie, a golden retriever who worked at Ground Zero for 10 months after 9/11, helping rescue and recovery workers. Nikie’s artifacts are currently on display in the museum.
Attendees will also receive a “K-9 for Kids” pin and will be able to hold the type of boots Nikie wore during the recovery efforts, as well as view a related film with photos of Nikie, his son Buddy, and Chance.
Related hands-on activities will follow. This week, participants will view portraits of 9/11 canines and then draw their own dog portraits using oil pastels.
The program is free with admission and will be held in the Education Center this Saturday at 3 p.m. It is appropriate for children ages four to 10 and their adult caretakers.
