Visitors to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum are encouraged to leave handwritten messages of remembrance, hope and love at the interactive registry known as the Signing Steel. These digital screens are located in Foundation Hall near a piece of World Trade Center steel and all virtual tributes are stored in an archive.
About 11 percent of museum visitors leave messages at the Signing Steel. In 2016, more than 208,000 signing steel entries were left by visitors and over 600,000 messages have been recorded since the museum opened in May 2014.
When leaving a message, visitors indicate their hometown and their unique signature is then projected onto a global map along with thousands of other messages which typically evoke themes of world peace, solidarity, gratitude and reminders to never forget.
