Even before the wreckage was cleared from the World Trade Center site, 9/11 family members, officials, and New Yorkers began contemplating commemorative and commercial possibilities for the site’s redevelopment. The 9/11 Memorial opened on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, followed three years later by the 1,776-foot high One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
