Behind The Lens: Rain on the Parapets

After rain, water droplets cover the surface of a names panel of the 9/11 Memorial. Photo by Jin Lee.

Behind The Lens: In this series, 9/11 Memorial & Museum staff photographer Jin Lee shares his view of select photographs taken on the site.

I took this photo on a cold, rainy winter day. A rain cloud briefly passed over the memorial and it just poured.

As a photographer, one thing I find fascinating about the parapets is that when it rains, water droplets separate and the surface changes. Light shines onto the names differently after a rain.

In this moment, a unique light was reflecting off One World Trade Center. I feel like rain like this always adds a sense of life to the memorial.
