In August 1974, high-wire walker Philippe Petit affixed a 131-foot-long cable between the Twin Towers, 1,350 feet above the World Trade Center Plaza. The balancing act, performed without a net, served as the inspiration for The New Yorker’s double cover published five years after 9/11.
