Hundreds of trees will grow at the World Trade Center site, formerly known as ground zero.

About 400 swamp white oak and sweetgum trees will stretch out above the 9/11 Memorial's plaza, creating a rustling canopy of leaves. The trees were harvested within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, including Pennsylvania and near Washington D.C., areas that were targeted on 9/11.

Until the trees can be transplanted at the site in the coming months, the arboreal lot is receiving quality care at a Millstone Township, N.J., nursery.

While a tree famously grows in Brooklyn, hundreds will inch toward the sky in lower Manhattan.
