9/11 Memorial Mobile Apps

The Explore 9/11 iPhone application is a guide to understanding 9/11 through the eyes of witnesses. Watch a short demo or download the app now for free at Apple’s App store.

Here's what the app features:

Tour
A seven-stop walking tour of the area around the World Trade Center, accompanied by audio and photo narration. The events of the day and its aftermath are told by first responders, rescue workers, volunteers, and those who lived and worked in lower Manhattan on 9/11. The tour begins at the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site at 20 Vesey St., in lower Manhattan. While the tour is best experienced on site, the content can be accessed from anywhere.

Explore
View images related to the events of 9/11 taken nearby wherever you are. Includes an augmented reality mode in which photos are overlaid on the camera view. All photos were contributed to the museum by survivors and witnesses through 911history.org.

Timeline
An interactive timeline of the day’s events and aftermath. The timeline includes links to witness photos taken during these time blocks.

Offline Mode
Because many visitors turn off data roaming while traveling abroad, the app also operates in an offline mode. In this mode, all tour content is still accessible. “Explore” mode content will still need an internet connection as it pulls in photos live from 911history.org and is updated frequently. A map of several free WiFi hotspots near the tour route is included in the offline mode.

Memorial Guide
Explore the arrangement of names on the 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center. Listen to remembrances of those who were lost, spoken by family and friends. Locate sponsored cobblestones on the Memorial plaza. The arrangement of the 2,983 names on the Memorial reflects where people were on 9/11 and relationships they shared with others who were lost that day. We created the Memorial Guide to show the entire arrangement and the layers of meaning within it through technology.
