Ceremony Held to Honor Fallen Police Officers at the 9/11 Memorial
Approximately 250 cyclists descended on the 9/11 Memorial & Museum Wednesday morning for a ceremony honoring law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
The bike ride, associated with Police Unity Tour, an organization in its 21st year, departed from the World Trade Center site. The ceremony on the Memorial plaza included reading of the names of all police officers killed on 9/11, followed by a pipe and drum accompaniment. NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill gave brief remarks.
Having grown into nine chapters, the Police Unity Tour consists of nearly 2,500 members nationwide who embark on memorial bike rides annually.

In my time as a volunteer at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, there is one very profound truth I have learned. No matter who we are, where we are from, what we do, or how old we are, our lives were all changed on Sept. 11, 2001. This fact is universal, and it is part of what makes each visit to the Museum truly special.
On the morning of 9/11, Scott Strauss was on the train home when he heard over his Walkman that a plane struck the World Trade Center. As a detective with the Emergency Service Unit of the NYPD, he questioned how something like that could happen on such a beautiful day.
