9/11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM PARTNERS WITH CON EDISON TO PRESENT ICONIC TRIBUTE IN LIGHT
New York State Assembly Also Provides Essential Support of the Commemorative Public Art Installation

New York, NY – September 6, 2023 – As the nation prepares to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of 9/11, Con Edison has provided a generous grant to underwrite a significant portion of costs associated with presentation of Tribute in Light, which will once again soar above the New York City skyline from dusk on September 11 to dawn on September 12. The beams of light are viewable from a 60-mile radius around lower Manhattan. New York State Assembly Member Charles Fall has also secured critical funding from New York State in support of the installation.

“It’s more important than ever that we never forget all those we lost and how New York stood strong in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks,” said Con Edison President Matthew Ketschke. “For 200 years, Con Edison has been a constant through our city’s brightest days and its darkest moments.  Each year, the Tribute in Light is an iconic symbol of that strength, resilience, and New York’s forward progress.”

"When millions across the country and around the world pause to remember on 9/11, they look to the New York City skyline for the lights that remind us of what we lost,” said New York Assemblyman Charles Fall. “It is paramount to all New Yorkers that this statement of our resolve and strength shines bright each year and I’m proud that our state is making sure it happens.”

First presented in March 2002 to mark the six-month commemoration of 9/11 and honor the 2,977 lives lost that day, Tribute in Light consists of eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon light bulbs assembled in two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers. With its distinct aesthetic and emotional power, Tribute in Light garners worldwide attention each year and is an incomparable reminder of the day that changed our world forever. This display's goal is not only to honor those killed but also to ensure that a new generation learns the story of 9/11 and how our city and nation responded – with unity, resilience, and hope. The lights were custom-made by Space Cannon and the installation has been produced each year by Michael Ahern Production Services (MAPS).

“While Tribute in Light is visible mostly to those in the tri-state area, it’s globally recognized as a symbol of unity and resilience in the face of adversity,” said Beth Hillman, 9/11 Memorial & Museum President and CEO. “We are extremely grateful to this year's presenting partner Con Edison and also to Assembly Member Charles Fall and New York State for making this installation possible in 2023.”

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum has continued to be one of the most visited destinations in New York City, and Tribute in Light is an extension of the organization’s identity as a deeply meaningful and authentic New York institution. The 9/11 Memorial plaza will open to the public at 3 pm on September 11 and will remain open until midnight so that visitors can view the installation from the site of the attacks.
