TWIN BEAMS OF LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE NEW YORK CITY SKY ON SEPTEMBER 11

9/11 Memorial & Museum hosts annual Tribute in Light to mark the 24th anniversary and welcomes visitors to the Memorial plaza for a special viewing experience

New York, NY September 10, 2025 – From dusk on September 11 to dawn on September 12, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum hosts its annual commemorative art installation – Tribute in Light. The iconic tribute was first presented six months after 9/11 even while recovery and relief efforts at Ground Zero were still underway. Twenty-four years after the attacks, the two beams of light that symbolize the original Twin Towers are a central part of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s annual commemorative events and are presented by Con Edison.

Tribute in Light remains an important symbol of remembrance and is viewable from a 60-mile radius around lower Manhattan. The Memorial plaza will open to the public on September 11 at 3 p.m. following the names reading ceremony and will remain open until midnight so visitors can view the installation from where the Twin Towers once stood.

“As we mark the 24th anniversary of 9/11, Tribute in Light helps us reach a new generation, honor the 2,977 people killed, and recall the courage and compassion that helped New York City recover from the 9/11 attacks,” said Beth Hillman, President & CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. “Everyone who sees the two beams of light above the 9/11 Memorial joins our shared commitment to never forget. We are grateful to our Presenting Sponsor, Con Edison, a steadfast partner in our mission to commemorate, educate, and inspire.”

The display consists of 88 7,000-watt xenon lightbulbs assembled in two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the World Trade Center’s original Twin Towers.

“Con Edison’s response to the attacks on the World Trade Center restored power to lower Manhattan and helped support the city’s recovery,” said Matthew Ketschke, Con Edison President. “Tribute in Light is an important part of remembering the tragedy of that day, and it also serves as a beacon of hope. Con Edison invests in our highly skilled workforce to be ready 24/7 to act decisively to serve New Yorkers.  We are proud to once again sponsor this tribute to the communities where we work and live.”

Tribute in Light was conceived by several artists and designers who were brought together by the Municipal Art Society and Creative Time, including John Bennett, Gustavo Boneverdi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian LaVerdiere, and Paul Myoda, with lighting consultant Paul Marantz. The lights were custom-made by Space Cannon, and the installation is produced by Michael Ahern Production Services (MAPS).
