New on View: Torild Stray’s New York Metamorphosis
Norwegian-born artist Torild Stray’s charcoal drawing New York Metamorphosis was officially dedicated in the 9/11 Memorial Museum on March 5 at a ceremony attended by Stray and the Norwegian Consul General in New York Harriet E. Berg. The artwork, which depicts a stunning panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline, will greet visitors in the Museum’s Concourse Lobby.
From 1997 to 1998, Stray was one of 150 artists to participate in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s World Views initiative. The residency program provided artists with studios in unrented space in the Twin Towers, allowing for unimpeded aerial views of New York City. During her residency Stray produced several cityscapes including the 15-foot-long piece depicting the view from the North Tower’s 85th floor, now displayed in the Museum. Brooklyn-based artist and fellow World Views initiative participant Daniel Kohn’s artwork Looking South is also on view in the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s Tribute Walk.
“From the 85th floor, the vast views, dramatic night and daytime lighting, air traffic, waterways, raw urban landscapes and dramatic storms and wonderful fireworks transformed this powerful city, providing me with an unprecedented studio and life experience,” said Stray.

A group of 55 students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the school in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed by a gunman on Feb. 14, 2018, visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum yesterday morning.
Eleven Tears was commissioned by the American Express Corporation in memory of 11 employees who died on 9/11. Located in the ground floor lobby of Three World Financial Center, the memorial is within view of the Trade Center site.
