The 9/11 Memorial Museum’s education department hosted its first conference for educators in New York City and the surrounding area on Nov. 8 as a part of the Department of Education’s professional development day.

One hundred educators from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and New Hampshire participated in the full-day program that included a tour of the Museum and a choice of seven break-out sessions.

During sessions led by the Museum’s education staff, participants spent the day learning how to teach about 9/11 by using artifacts from the Museum’s collection and discussing the repercussions of the attacks and how art can be used to discuss challenging content with young children.

Barbara Rowes, a high school teacher at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School said, “I gained inspiration from the program.” When asked whether she would recommend it to a colleague, her response was an overwhelming yes, explaining that the staff was outstanding and the event was well run.

The sentiment was shared by Patricia Perretta from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn who shared that the professional development conference was “very well done!”

Due to the success of the program, the Memorial’s education team looks forward to hosting similar conferences in the future. Learn more about education programs at the 9/11 Memorial Museum here.
