The Liberty photo was taken on a stormy day just as the clouds broke. With the World Trade Center under construction and the skyline fading in the background, it made an interesting image. The photo stayed in my archives until after September 11 when it took on new meaning. While the original photo is a color slide, after scanning and cropping, conversion to black and white gave it the appropriate emotional context.
The accompanying three images were from a memorial that was put up at the University of California, Santa Cruz just after the attacks. It was a simple frame constructed of wood and string. People were invited to express their feelings by writing on the colored ribbons and weaving them through the piece. These photos were taken just before the piece was dismantled.
