Artist's Statement
Statement of Work
From 1985 to 1993, I photographed people coming in and out of the elevators in the World Trade Tower with the purple rug on the floor. During the spring and fall, at around lunch time on a sunny day, the sunlight bounced off the glass in the adjacent Tower and illuminated the shiny silver walls around the elevators. When the elevator doors opened, the interiors of the elevators, in contrast to the brightness outside, seemed dark and foreboding. When I revisited these photographs recently, they inspired me to make a new series of paintings; my earlier sense of foreboding having become tangible. I concentrated my attention only on people entering the elevators rather than passing in and out as I had in an earlier series, although I used the same group of photographs.
