Remembering September 11 - Paintings and Writings by Ed Rath
Artist’s Statement
I watched the twin towers burn from upper Manhattan while working on a renovation job. My daughter was attending Stuyvesant High School, which is just a few blocks away from ground zero. I spent the day looking for her,
and was greatly relieved when we both finally made it home to Brooklyn safely. The whole family was united again.
We lived with the horrible smell of burning rubble for months afterwards. We looked at the skyline everyday, shocked to see the towers gone.
Walking around for six hours among thousands of New Yorkers that day was an extraordinary experience. Everyone felt the great loss, but everyone stayed
calm and behaved well. New Yorkers bonded deeply that day through their
collective pain and grief.
I tried to capture the feeling of that day by painting crowds of people
walking away from the burning towers. The shock and sadness were apparent in every face.
Using images of subway riders from my sketch books, I made several paintings
of New Yorkers leaving ground zero.
My paintings of September 11 focus on the ordinary citizens of New York, and
how they conducted themselves during this stressful time. The tragedy seemed
to unify us and it brought out the best in people. I feel that the terrorist
failed in their mission, because people remained strong and dignified, and
did not give in to their fear.
