The series "Turmoil" and "In Flight" show a world inflicted by war, ethnic struggles, terrorism and global unrest. Although these are inspired by my experiences growing up in and surviving the Holocaust, they have a resonance in our present cultural landscape. This body of work was produced in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks; these works were a means by which I not only expressed my shock, horror, and profound sadness and loss, but also my hope to call attention to the relationships of contemporary conflict - between progress and destruction, between future and past. But as all may disunite, my collection and assemblage of images, words, “passages” from many different areas, suggest there can be a unity amongst divergent elements – and for me, the process of painting, gives that concept an importance on both an individual and a universal level.
As an artist, I interrogate the forces that destroy and separate people and contemplate the feasibility of bringing them together peacefully by building bridges between cultures through art. I try to raise the awareness of destruction and its futility, whether human or otherwise, to give hope for a more peaceful future.
By combining personal memories of conflict and disaster with images of more recent global events, my art becomes a continuous dialogue with myself as well as the external, conveying ideas, evoking emotions and awareness. I really never lose contact with reality but I often reflect my own inner and outer world, experience and scattered impressions in painting. This fits into our turbulent times.
