    Statement of Work

    9/11 London Foundation Commission Statement

Creating a public sculpture from the WTC steel is an incredible honor. My intention is to put forth an artwork that will respectfully honor those involved and affected by the events on September 11, 2001 as well as serve as a visual symbol for peace and tolerance. I have titled this sculpture ‘Peace [After 9/11]’.

My idea for the WTC steel is to sand and re-finish part of the steel to reveal within the material a, polished, light-reflecting, surface. I will create a meditative environment on the steel plate, comprised of a serene, ethereal mirro. I would like to leave some of the steel surface on the beams in its natural state, thereby paying homage and respect to the material and the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Sanding down part of the steel to reveal in the material a quiet, contemplative field would create a poetic public artwork while respecting the material. The columns will remain in their current, unchanged form, thereby presenting the material in a pure and honest manner. Sanding and polishing the surface of the steel into a mirror finish will transform the material into a light-reflecting, almost transparent form.

It is my hope that by standing upright the fallen steel columns, I may evoke a quiet yet strong message of transcendence. That we as a collective consciousness may respectfully commemorate the memory of the events of September 11 and stand tall again, looking to the future with a message of tolerance and peace so that we may never experience such a tragedy again.

I have been working on a series of non-denominational, large-scale public works for spiritual spaces; I see this piece as being a very important non-denominational, spiritual, transcendent work. I would apply my traditional metal-finishing techniques and put forth a work in a minimalist aesthetic. I bring my family tradition from the sword-smith turned Buddhist priests who raised me in Japan and my approach of reverence and compassion that I learned in the Buddhist temple I grew up in. Funerals and memorials were a daily part of my upbringing in the temple; I would execute this piece with a respect for universal beliefs and spiritual traditions.
