Artist's Statement
Cynthia Schildhauer
Artist Statement
When I paint, I attempt to understand this life, and to express in a personal way how beautiful, and sometimes confusing and complicated, our world can be. My work is layered with color and many other odds and ends. I believe that all things can be revealed to be more than just their appearances. Thus, each piece I do is multi-layered, consistent in the idea that there are many surprises under the surface of things.
My paintings tell colorful stories and mysterious poems in visual form about the trials and tribulations of daily life. I play with certain images that symbolize what I am feeling at the time. My layered paintings convey how I make it through my daily life with the demands that we all face…family, relationships, economic survival as well as the spiritual / emotional tugs of war and revelations that transpire through it all. Even with my landscape work, I attempt to portray the hidden layers of our natural world. I am grateful to be alive and fully immersed in a rich life filled with contradictions and amazing surprises

Encaustic
Cynthia’s mixed media painting include the ancient painting technique called encaustic,
a method where natural beeswax, mixed with bright pigments and resins, is heated
to create transparent, mysterious multi-layered surfaces. As evidenced by 3rd century Fayum wax paintings that are perfectly preserved, Cynthia’s paintings can be wiped with a damp cloth and will remain bright and intact for years to come, as long as they avoid extreme heat,
