After a friend of mine discussed his joining and fighting for his country, then graciously shared his entire duration with me, I, unfortunately, could not join myself so I had to do something. Along with periodically sending him and other troops 'care packages', I felt compelled to write something. Upon completion, on the first anniversary, the final version of this poem was submitted and published in local newspapers and also was accepted into the National Archives.
