There are two sides to every story. The Media create and broadcast work of their own that is edited into what they think the viewer will find relevant or likable, however, a lot of research, elements, and entire pieces can "get left on the cutting-room floor", so to speak. It doesn't necessarily apply to our brains for those who have them, especially if you are close to, or involved in matters related to or places where stuff "went down". I'm a New Yorker.
