The tragic events of 911 inspired me and my wife Linda to submit a design for the WTC Memorial Competition. Our design included pavilions where artist would pay tribute to the victims, bring some solace to their families, and help a nation heal. I also wanted to create a narrative multi-panel relief that the victim’s families could open once a year and feel a sense of hope. This goal has never left me.
During a period of 10 years, I worked on a sculpture that pays homage to the victims of 911, the heroic first responders, and the dedicated workers that endured the recovery. Taking inspiration from the steel building construction of the twin towers, modern narrative art, and polyptych altarpieces, I combined these elements to create an artwork that unfolds to convey a journey from life to death to rebirth. The sculpture contains fours scenes folded into one multi-panel sculpture. The sculpture represents the aluminum facades of the original twin towers, the aftermath of the collapse, the dedicated men and women who worked during the recovery, and the symbolic spiritual journey of the victims.
