Rather than documenting major events or landmarks directly, the work focuses on quiet moments, fleeting human presence, architecture, light, and shadow—elements that reveal how memory continues to exist within the everyday life of the city.

My relationship with New York is inseparable from the events of September 11, 2001. On that morning, while studying in Vancouver, I learned of the attacks shortly before class. Like millions of people around the world, I experienced a profound sense that history had shifted. Although I was far from New York, the city became deeply embedded in my imagination as a place of loss, resilience, and renewal.

Over the following decades, I returned to New York many times, often with a camera. I found myself drawn not only to its iconic skyline, but also to its quieter spaces: early morning streets, bridges crossing the East River, solitary figures moving through light and shadow, and moments where the city seemed to pause. These photographs are not intended as a direct representation of September 11. Instead, they reflect on the atmosphere of a city that has carried memory forward while continuing to live, change, and rebuild.

The title City of Quiet Lights refers both to the physical light of New York and to the enduring human spirit that persists beyond tragedy. Through photography, the project seeks to create a visual meditation on memory, resilience, and the traces people leave behind in the urban environment.

As the twenty-fifth anniversary of September 11 approaches, this work is offered as a personal tribute from an observer outside the United States whose understanding of New York has been shaped by the city's extraordinary capacity for remembrance and renewal.
