    'Tribute to The Fallen'

    ========================================================

Do you recall where you were
on that still morning so blue
    I recall it as yesterday
    Most clearly I do

for it was on the 12th
a new job I would start
    who knew that America
would be stabbed in the heart

    For on the clear morning
    4 jetliners took off
    for business or pleasure
    skies stained only with exhaust

And once up in the air
    the bad people took over
    with a wicked agenda
that would not end up in clover

They had trained here among us
    without any of us knowing
    a plot diabolical
    the evil kept growing

    Until into that city
    in that most fateful hour
    came a jumbo jet screaming
    full speed into that tower

    And as flames billowed higher
    another was seen
    as a recurring nightmare
    and repeated the scene

    Now both pillars afire
    America stood still
    while another drama
    was unfolding on a hill

    Far away from the flames
    American courage took hold
    with those now famous words
from the heroes - 'Let's roll!'

To the heroes of Flight 93
    go all these next lines
    in which during dark hours
    many rose up to shine

And they took down that plane
    ending all their lives there
    in a mission so crucial
    that all cared to share

    To save a great symbol
    targeted on that day
to those who saved the White House
    we all say 'Hooray'!

And now back to the towers
    engulfed in smoke and flame
    with thousands inside
we would know all their names

    As we watched helplessly
as first one tower came down
    and soon after the other
    in smoke they did drown

    But not before leaving
    many images to see
    those calling, those crying
those leaping down to the street

    But America is strong
she rises up from all this
    though all of us left
    may not recapture the bliss

    In our post-9/11 days
    all our lives are affected
to this day when we travel
    'My shampoo is rejected?'

    Perhaps the most lingering
    symbol of all
is the part of the tower
    that refused to fall

    A kind of one-digit salute
to those who had done this
    America rises up strong
Says you know what you can kiss...

    As we recall and rebuild
    from 8 years ago
    I find it refreshing
    to live and to know
    that my country recovers
    and continues to grow

a tribute piece - to be read this Friday, 9/11/09 at the Grove Bookstore
