Artist's Statement
Statement of Work
Over the course of his career, John Bulmer has documented the lasting impacts of September 11th through multiple mediums, including painting, photography, and written journalism. This body of work approaches the anniversary and aftermath of the attacks from different angles: visual, documentary, and narrative, built up over time rather than produced for a single anniversary or exhibition.
Scope of Work
Bulmer's 9/11 related work includes a series of paintings addressing the emotional and cultural aftermath of the attacks, numerous published articles examining their lasting effects on communities and institutions, and an ongoing photographic practice documenting physical remnants and memorials connected to the event. His most recent photographic project, Witness Marks 25, examines World Trade Center steel incorporated into the sculpture Tempered by Memory at High Rock Park in Saratoga Springs, photographed over eight months to mark the twenty fifth anniversary of the attacks.

John Bulmer is an artist and photographer based in New York's Capital Region, with thirty years of experience spanning photography, art, design, and writing. His photographic practice moves between traditional and wet plate collodion processes, often shot on vintage film cameras, and his work has appeared in The New York Times. He is also the author of a published novel and a history/guide book, bringing a narrative sensibility to his visual work.
His practice is rooted in landscape, memory, and the physical traces time leaves behind, themes central to Witness Marks 25, a 25-image photographic study of the World Trade Center steel embedded in the sculpture Tempered by Memory at High Rock Park, photographed across eight months and every season, twenty-five years after September 11th.
