The story that I present is an eyewitness account of 9/11 from my perspective. I worked at Deloitte & Touche at 2 WFC, across the street from the WTC. I was there on 9/11/01 and this is what I experienced.
I began this poem on September 11, 2001, after hearing the reports of the attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C. and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
My relationship to the World Trade Center has been serendipitous. I remember I wasn’t that impressed when they were built. I was around 7 years old when they were finished, I remember having no opinion.
The images of September 11 2001--the falling and the fallen, that clear blue sky, the striped structure of the towers, the smoke and fire-- visually define the beginning of a new reality.
My name is Clare Gibson, and in my spare time, I am a member of my Church's Poetry Group, and we create 2 booklets every year, and ask for donations, the proceeds of which go to a local homeless charity.
When I made this print twenty five years ago, shock, despair and horror were my initial responses. I hope we've arrived at a place where we share a collective understanding about humanity
After the events of September 11, 2001 I was moved to write these three poems, two of which honor the three hundred and forty three New York City firefighters who lost their lives, saving the lives of others.
Creating images of New York City since childhood, raised a family in my loft 12 blocks from Ground Zero, lived through the horror and aftermath, photographed several important and tragic personalities intimately involved.
