Like most, I watched in horror as the terrorist attacks against the United States unfolded on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. A native New Yorker now living in Dallas, I wanted to help.
For 7 years in the 80's I lived in New York and came to identify with the city and its people. I was not present at 9/11, but after the attacks, the shock and confusion seemed only to grow as time passed.
Towers was released before completion of Dave's second album, to coincide with the 5th anniversary of 9-11. The song is emotionally charged and rings with a poignant message of peace and praise for the true heroes of that fateful day.
“I Will Remember” was written for my younger cousin Mark Hindy in the months after September 11th. Mark worked for Cantor Fitzgerald and was only 28 years old. There was something so indescribably special about Mark. He was a kid in a 6’4” body.
Minutes after the 1st plane struck the North Tower, we had evacuated 140 West Street to the corner of Vesey and West St. We didn't yet know it was a plane attack. We stood frozen in place looking up at people desperate to be saved.
