The Survivor Tree’s story of renewal, rebirth, resilience and hope has been inspiring me for several years now.

The Lexeme Series: Remembering 9/11

I’m Barbara Barron, a retired photo-journalist. I lived a mile away from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Over the years, I have had a deep and abiding interest in the personal and cultural expression of memory, it is at the core of my work.

I love your country and your people and education.

In 2001 I was awarded a residency through LMCC at the World Trade Center to paint the vista from the 92nd floor. On the morning of 9/11 I stopped off to vote on my way to my studio in the North Tower. My life was spared but not my work.

New York was a place that I would visit during family vacations to see relatives. My mom grew up in Washington Heights. There is special meaning to me from this City. The attacks of 9/11 caused a lot of grief, but did bring the country together.
