Ungrievable Lives: An Anti-memorial to 9/11

Description

This work seeks to apprehend the value of an American life in terms of a non-American life. A gold ingot bar is placed on the heavier side of a balance as representative of the value of an American life. A piece of halal meat, hair shavings, and nail clippings are placed on the lighter side of the balance as being representative of the value of an Iraqi or Afghani life.

This work asks of the viewer, "Which life is more valuable? Why?"

On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, can we as a nation grieve for the 9/11 victims, as well as the millions who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why are some lives deemed "ungrievable?"
