Recently, legislation was introduced by Republican Congressman Tom MacArthur with the aim of enabling the federal government to help fund the 9/11 Memorial plaza.
The National 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center Act was proposed to support the 9/11 Memorial Foundation. The Memorial plaza is free to visitors and this funding would help keep the Memorial accessible to all. As a result, the act will designate the 9/11 Memorial as a national memorial, authorizing up to $25 million in annual funding for the operations and security of the 9/11 Memorial plaza. A recent story published by NJ.com provides more details.
Congressman MacArthur stated in a press release that, “A federal recognition of this kind will solidify the memorial’s standing and recognize the endurance of the survivors, the bravery of those that risked their lives to save others, and the power of our free nation to overcome evil with good.”
