Martyrs
The horror of the people in the planes that crashed into the towers seems unimaginable and yet flying in planes requires an act of faith every time we board. Belief in modern technology, trust in vast systems that combine machinery and humanity, faith in buildings that scrape the sky, agreeing to believe that all these interactions will work for one's own benefit is the glue that holds modern society together. This belief system was one of the targets of the terrorists, the passengers of American Airline 11 and United Airline 175 were its martyrs.
