Gary Marlon Suson, an FDNY Honorary Battalion Chief, served seven months as the official photographer at Ground Zero for the FDNY. Originally from the Chicago area, Suson began shooting photography at age 11 on his suburban Barrington Hills farm. He moved to New York after winning the National Kodak Medallion as a high schooler to pursue his passion for photography, and shot portraits for B.B. King, Shaquille O’Neal, artist LeRoy Neiman, and more. In November, 2001, Suson was invited in and granted full access to every single part of Ground Zero by the FDNY to document the rescue and recovery effort.

Requiem: Images of Ground Zero chronicles Suson’s singular photographic journey into the heart of Ground Zero. The 280 images included in the volume—documenting everything from the honor guard ceremonies to the K-9 recovery dogs—provide an intimate glimpse of life at Ground Zero.
