    Statement of Work

My artwork enables me to generate visible evidence of my connection with life and other human beings. The ideas that most galvanize my creativity always in some way encourage relationship, whether to family, friends, or a higher power. I work best when I’m creating for or about someone I know or learn to know, building visual images that express mutually understood ideas.
As an illustrator and graphic artist, I most often work digitally. The style I use for designs shows the influence of my years as a commercial screenprint designer. That artwork is whimsical and colorful; I use devices like banners, repeat patterns, frame treatments, and text within each piece. I find perpetual mystery in digital technology as it simultaneously enables me to envision and create.
Combining “new age” spiritual beliefs with my commercial art background has led me to originate what I call “Birthprint” paintings. In them, I combine an individual’s Western and Chinese horoscopes, numerology, and other esoteric information to make a personal artwork. Originally created in gouache, vivid and opaque, on acid-free smooth watercolor paper, I do them now on a digital template as well. These are still fun, not quite as individual, but not as expensive as when they were hand-painted.
Since I developed “Birthprints”, I’ve been inspired to invent a number of other projects. For instance, I made characters who represent the twelve Western astrological signs which were licensed to be printed on tee shirts. Presently, I’m designing a series of illustrations—“Goddesses” who embody positive human qualities, such as Energy, Balance, and Peace. While I’m working with my digital tools, intuition takes over; I tap into a channel of spiritual energy and the perfect image flows forth.
Besides digital and commercial work, I have an abiding passion for collage that utilizes cut and paste techniques, altered images and found objects. Juxtaposing, rupturing, and refocusing images from catalogs, magazines, newspapers, old photographs and detritus I’ve picked up in my travels awakens a part of my psyche that my other work doesn’t touch. I continue to use personal objects like old family photos, still craving relational warmth in my art.
The brilliant dancer, Martha Graham, once said, “...keep open and aware...to the (expressive) urges that motivate you.” I channel my expressive motivation through interaction with others.
